Abby and Dan Plested's Minimal Maximalism

20 Apr, 2022

In the Auckland home of Abby Plested, social influencer and makeup artist, husband Dan and their three young children.

The effervescent Abby Plested has always adopted an open door policy for visitors, encouraging drop-ins ‘just because’ at any time, with little or no warning. The house may not be perfect at that moment in time, toys on the floor and dishes in the sink, but these vulnerabilities don’t stop Abby from bringing people together and creating a haven where visitors can walk in and be loved, where they are heard. Abby and her families new home has become a hub for their ‘village’ and through a few cosmetic upgrades and design changes, it now perfectly reflects Abby’s bright and maximalist design style and personality.

Located in a fringe suburb of Auckland City and just a stone’s throw away from a number of beautiful eastern beaches, Abby’s new home is perfectly positioned for the much coveted family-fun lifestyle. Close to schools, with plenty outdoor space for kids to roam and importantly, decent coffee and good shopping not too far away.

After having a few lockdowns under their belts by mid 2021, the couple decided it was time to start property hunting for a home that served their family differently. This change came in the form of a 1950’s house that had more recently been beautifully renovated and extended, offering several different zones where they could sprawl out and be kept occupied for extended stretches spent at home; a pool, basketball hoop and grass for the kids, and a home gym setup in the garage for the parents.

Abby had a vision for making the home uniquely theirs as soon as she stepped through the front door. All that was needed were a few small but impactful decorating changes: new curtains, carpets, and updating pendant lights. With a simple beige carpet and white wall backdrop, the hero of all of the rooms are the artfully curated furniture and art pieces.

We spoke to Abby about the vision for her home, where she finds all of her unique pieces and how she puts this together.

01 — How would you best describe your home?

Lived in, comfortable yet special and thought out.

02 — How did you want your home to feel?

I have three kids and my husband and I LOVE people so our home is always filled with company. Because of that I want my home to feel relaxed, inviting and calm for those who come over. I don’t want perfection.

03 — How did you come to select the carpet that you did?

I found an inspiration photo of velvety looking taupe plush carpet which kicked it all off for me. I sent a message through the Flooring Xtra website with the photo asking what would be the closest match and the team came back so fast with options. I was so impressed. The team totally nailed it and I ended up picking the perfect one alongside them.

04 — What was important for your flooring choice?

One thing I know to be true is the colour of your carpet or flooring can change everything. We originally had dark carpet in the bedrooms, and along with the constant need to vacuum it, it really didn’t do the spaces any service. I changed the carpet to a light taupe and it instantly made the rooms bigger and brighter. It allowed the bedrooms to feel calm. It also has a velvet silk like finish and I can’t get enough of it! I love the feeling when I walk into those rooms. Everyone who saw the before and after transformation is blown away.

05 — Were there any considerations that you needed to pay when choosing your flooring?

We have concrete flooring that comes straight off from the rooms where the new carpet was getting laid so I wanted to make sure that the two surfaces matched. The team from Flooring Xtra helped with that and brought samples over for me to keep and test out!

06 — Do you have a favourite spot in your home?

I have so many favourites, it just depends what mood I am in. One of them would have to be our small lounge. It hosts a Vicki Lee blush pink floral print which I cherish. It’s also the main area where people naturally gather. We have had so many people drink coffee and laugh together sitting on the couches in there.

07 — What is your favourite item in your home?

My Tim Webber Day bed. He’s a very good friend of mine and made it just for us so it makes it extra special.

08 — Where do you draw design inspiration from?

Books, Books and Books! I could sit there all day looking at interiors from across the world and at people’s spaces that mean so much to them.

09 — What are your favourite stores to shop from?

I feel like my home has been put together from a real mix of places with a lot of second-hand finds that I have sourced along the way. I do find myself on the Father Rabbit website a lot! Fourth Street Home is divine and I find I want everything from there. Tim Webber, a friend and local designer is my go to for furniture, The Poi Room for art and also The Poster Club has some awesome prints.
