What is Floorcaster?

Choosing new flooring can be tricky, and often a sample laid on the floor or viewed online will not always give the viewer a sense of what the whole room will look and feel like once the flooring has been laid. Floorcaster has been developed to help customers get their heads around the many flooring possibilities available to choose from, and the visual impact the flooring can have on a room. To get started, simply upload a photograph of your room into the Floorcaster website, you will be able to trace the outline of your floor and start inserting various products.

How do I access Floorcaster?

Visit http://floorcaster.flooringxtra.co.nz/

or

Click on the 'FLOORCASTER' tab on the main navigation menu on the Flooring Xtra website (www.flooringxtra.co.nz)

or

If a product you are interested in is featured on Floorcaster, you will see a 'Floorcaster' button featured on the product page page below the 'Add to Measure & Quote Request' button - clicking this will take you to the Floorcaster.

What devices support Floorcaster?

The software works best on computers but is also compatible with tablets.

We do not recommend you use this software on tablets any smaller than 7inch / smartphones as you need to draw around the floor to mask it out. This is somewhat problematic and fumbly on small devices, detracting for the user experience.

Supported Tablets are as follows: 4th Generation iPad, iPad Mini 2, 3, & 4, iPad Air 1 & 2, iPad Pro, Android Tablet Version 4.4 or newer, Android Tablet screen size minimum: 7.0.

What type of images can I upload?

Images can be no larger than 30MB in file size.

Images can only be JPG, JPEG and PNG formats.

Landscape format works best (that is, the photo is wider than it is tall).

We recommend using a high quality photo that is in focus.

We recommend your image captures a clear section of flooring in the room, to ensure the outline of the floor is easy to trace around.

How do I trace my floor?

Once you have selected and uploaded an image that meets our recommendations, your browser window will refresh and a pop-out with video instructions will appear, with a step by step guide to tracing the flooring in your image. To scroll through the instructional videos on this page, click the white arrow to right hand side of the pop-up.

The instructions are as follows:

1) Outline the floor surface using the Outline Trace Tool

At the top of your screen you will see a Tools Menu on a grey background, you will see two green outline tools to select from (one is a freeform tool and the other a default square shape tool), select the best and easiest tool for defining the shape of your floor, and start drawing. IMPORTANT NOTE - This is a vital step, once you have finished outlining your floor, it's important that you click back onto the very initial dot that you first drew, otherwise the outline will not connect from start to finish and the flooring product imagery will not appear correctly in your image.

2) Erase any part of the outlined area as required using the Erase Trace Tool

At the top of your screen in the tools menu, you will see two red outline tools to select from (one is a freeform tool and the other a default square shape tool), select the best and easiest one for creating the shape you need. Trace around the area that you wish to remove from the floor (e.g. this may be an object that's on the floor, or the feet of your furniture that you've accidentally outlined over - if you don't use the erase tracer tool the flooring will cover these). Remember, as per the outline tool, when using the erase trace tool you will need to click back onto the very initial dot that you first drew.

Use the (+) and (-) symbols on the Tools Menu to Zoom In and Out.

Once you are finished defining your floor using the Outline and Erase tools, click NEXT.

We recommend you use a computer mouse to trace the outline of your floor, not a laptop touchpad or an iPad screen.

How do I use the Perspective Tool?

For illustrated instructions on how to use Floorcaster visit - https://www.flooringxtra.co.nz/floorcaster

Once you have defined the outline of your floor using the Outline Trace Tool and the Erase Trace Tool and have clicked 'Next', your browser window will refresh and a pop-out with video instructions will appear, with a step by step guide to using the Perspective Tool to define the perspective plane (e.g. the slope, depth, angle of the flooring in the room - by doing some the flooring you insert will appear more realistic). To scroll through the instructional videos on this page, click the white arrow to right hand side of the pop-up.

The instructions are as follows:

1) A grid will appear to align the proportion of the floor

A yellow parallelogram will automatically appear overtop of your image. Each of of the four corners/points of the parallelogram are defined by a circle. Drag the circles across your image to alter the shape of the parallelogram. You want to alter the shape of the parallelogram, so that is best represents the physical plane of the floor. You want the angle of the yellow parallelogram to replicate the angle and slope of the floor in the image. The easiest way to do this is to drag each circle to each corner of the room. If there are no corners in the foreground of the image, drag the circle out onto the checkered background of the site (you can zoom out to see more of this using the (-) button in the grey tool menu) to the point where you think the room ends in real life.

To see an example of how this looks, click here.

2) Select preview and adjust the grid corners

Click the green 'Preview' button located in the grey tool menu at the top of the screen, a default wood flooring product will populate into the parallelogram. If it does not look accurate to real-life, edit it further by dragging the circles located at each corner/point on the parallelogram. Ensure that the whole floor surface is covered with perspective grid.

6) Enter the actual size of your room (height/width of the whole room in the photos)

Once you're happy with the appearance of the floor perspective, enter the flooring dimensions of the physical room pictured in the photograph, into the FLOOR SIZE fields located in the grey tool menu at the top of the screen. Both the height and width of the floor plane of the room must be entered in meters.

Click the green 'FINISH' button located on the right hand side of the grey tool menu at the top of the screen.

I'm having issues tracing the floor, what should I do?

We recommend you use a computer mouse to trace the outline of your floor, not a laptop touchpad or an iPad screen.

Why do the flooring products I select not appear on my floor?

Here are the most common reasons why this might occur:

1) You've forgotten to click the very first circle when outlining your

You may have missed a vital step when tracing the outline of the floor. You need to remember to click back onto the very initial dot that you first drew once you've finished outlining the floor, otherwise the outline will not connect from start to finish and the flooring product imagery will not appear correctly in your image.

2) You haven't drawn in the perspective correctly

The perspective parallelogram needs to cover the floor area entirely otherwise, the area(s) not covered will not populate with flooring.

3) Your image is not landscape orientation

Portrait style or square style images may encounter issues when uploaded to Floorcaster, we recommend you alway use an landscape orientation image.

4) You've resized your browser window or zoomed in while using Floorcaster

We recommend you don't resize your browser window, or zoom in on your browser window manually (without using the Zoom Icons in the Tools Menu at the top of the Floorcaster screen), as it may cause issues with how the flooring looks once inserted.

5) Your internet connection has fallen out / been disrupted / is slow
