As we make our way through 2022, we’re taking a moment to explore the trends at the forefront of interior design. Read on to discover the three most popular trends we’ve identified and our tips on how to incorporate them into your home.

1. Curves

It should come as no surprise that ‘curves’ make the list of top interior trends for 2022, this much loved look features throughout the homes of style aficionados across Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok… And for good reason. The look embraces a softening of design by fusing rounded edges and lines with unconventional, sculptural shapes. The result is whimsical, playful and comforting, a welcoming mood following the turmoil of the global pandemic. The look pays homage to both the 1920’s Art Deco and 1960’s Modernism movements, with its imaginative forms and clean lines; yet elevated for the 21st century through the use of natural fabrics, interesting textures, and a neutral colour palette (think ivory, beige and taupe).

Curves have infiltrated every aspect of interior design, from arched doorways and recessed shelves to accent chairs, rugs and even artwork, so there are plenty of ways to incorporate the look into your home. For those willing to commit, large-scale furniture items such as a low ‘puffy’ couches or round-legged tables can add instant wow factor to any room. But for those simply looking to dabble, smaller décor items such as wavy mirrors, circular lamps and bendy vases provide a quick and easy update whilst remaining relatively budget friendly.

2. New rustic

The new rustic trend hearkens back to days gone by, inviting a sense of nostalgia for simpler, happier times. The style is a combination of vintage and modern, and is characterised by the use of muted tones that reference nature (think rust, oatmeal, walnut and olive) mixed in with elements of European and Californian design. It draws on contrast and juxtaposition to play with the senses, think light versus dark, new versus old, pattern versus texture. Overall, the look is minimalist yet comforting and cosy, with heavy emphasis on the use of quality, natural materials such as washed linen, reclaimed timber, brushed brass, calacatta marble and mottled travertine.

The new rustic trend is one that’s here to stay, at least for a while. As it draws heavily on natural and vintage elements, it’s safe to say it’s a ‘future-proofed’ look that you won’t regret investing in. To embrace the look, get hunting for lovingly restored yet worn vintage pieces, such as recycled timber benches and stools, stone plinths, antique day beds and buffets, and imperfect ceramics. These can be complemented with newer décor items such as stone washed linen cushions, accent chairs upholstered in shearling or boucle fabric, pleated lampshades, organically shaped vessels and potted olive trees.

3. Colour blocking

Having taken a backseat for a while, we’re now seeing a resurgence in the use of bold, block colour. This trend has trickled through from fashion and into home décor; an interior design interpretation of the head-to-toe monochromatic outfits that have graced the runways of late. Exciting and fun, this look conveys a sense of optimism and hope for the future, and our readiness to explore new possibilities. Colours from nature are at the forefront of this look (think sage, toffee, buttery yellow and periwinkle blue – Pantone of the year), as they tie in perfectly with both the curve and new rustic trends. The key to this look is the restrained and refined use of colour, a ‘signature’ or ‘hero’ colour should provide the main statement for any room.

This trend is not for the faint of heart, and does require a fair amount of commitment to one particular colour. For those interested in trying this trend, take time to really consider the colours you are drawn to, inspired by, and how they make you feel. Couches, rugs, occasional chairs, cabinetry and tiles can all look strikingly avant-garde when dressed in an eye-catching colour. For those looking to trial this trend consider low-commitment, interchanged items… Duvet covers and sheet sets, coffee table books, vases, coffee mugs and prints provide an easy place to start.
