Meet The Maker: Our Handcrafted Rugs
05 Aug, 2021
There is something gratifying about having hand made pieces in our homes to appreciate and enjoy. Despite machinery being able to attain a ‘perfect’ outcome each time, the artistry behind a talented pair of hands is something that can’t be replicated.
Many of the rugs available at Flooring Xtra, have been hand crafted by artisans who spin, dye, and weave yarns, add embroidered touches, print and finish by hand.
Carefully handmade
Most of our floor rugs are carefully handwoven in India. The knowledge of the craftspeople is often handed down through generations, using traditional techniques that have stood the test of time. These artisans know their craft intimately, from picking the finest yearns and fibres to hand tufting intricate and multi-coloured designs. These precision, attention to detail and pride in making these rugs, is something only achievable in a carefully handmade product. We believe each piece tells a story and is inspiring addition to a space.
Design and construction
There is a high degree of hand-worked processes required with some rugs taking between 2 and 3 days to make. Many of these floor rugs are handmade on vertical looms, where two craftspeople work simultaneously on a single floor rug.
The complex and nuanced nature of the handmade processes make each rug unique. While we aim for consistency, minor variations in colour, pattern texture and size are sometimes evident. We feel they create beautiful and unique products: we hope you enjoy them.
We believe that this makes our rugs all the more beautiful and enjoyable to take home.
Working with artisans
Our rug supplier Mulberi, is proud to be licensed by GoodWeave, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to ending child labour and offering educational opportunities to children in rugweaving communities around the world. GoodWeave fulfills this mission by creating market demand for certified child-labour-free rugs, monitoring supply chains, rescuing and educating child labourers, and providing critical services for weaving families.
The partnership with GoodWeeave is an important part of our commitment within the textile industry and how I moves into the future. We want to ensure our floor rugs come from a transparent and ethical supply chain, that is free of child labour and supports our workers’ rights.
