Coastal Calm: Erin & Steve’s Reno Journey
Meet the inspiring family behind this beautiful renovation story: based in stunning Mount Maunganui, Erin, Steve, and their two children, Lakey (8) and Rocco (4). Since purchasing their very first home in 2014 (with a borrowed deposit and a big leap of faith), Erin and Steve have spent the past decade turning dated properties into thoughtfully renovated, welcoming homes — all while raising their young family and doing much of the hard work themselves.
Their most recent project marks a special milestone: the first time they’ve taken on a full renovation without living through it. Instead of navigating construction chaos with toddlers underfoot, they stepped into a new rhythm — still hands-on, but with the support of tradies and a clear vision driving the process. What started as a tired 70s home was transformed in just nine weeks into a serene, light-filled space full of character and calm.

With a focus on functionality, warmth, and wellbeing, this project beautifully balances design with heart. Erin shares what made this renovation different, how they brought it to life on a budget, and what’s next for their family of passionate renovators.
Can you tell us a bit about this latest renovation project and what drew you to the property in the first place?
Steve and I have always loved renovating our homes, but this time we wanted to take on a project without living in it during the process. The moment we peered through the windows, we knew this was exactly what we were looking for. It was in its original 70s state, with solid bones, beautiful natural light, and sunshine streaming in throughout the day. The footprint offered the opportunity to add a third bedroom or study, and it sat on a quiet, safe street. We could instantly see the potential — so much so, we put in an offer then and there.

How did this project differ from your past renovations—especially since it was the first time you didn’t live in the home during the process?
This project moved at a much faster pace — just nine weeks from start to finish. While we still tackled as much as we could ourselves, we brought in tradies to help, which definitely speed things up. There was a lot more project managing involved this time, and I really enjoyed stepping into that role. We had an awesome team of guys to work with, and we’re so grateful for them! In the past, we’ve done most of the work ourselves — living in the mess and slowly chipping away at it as time and budget allowed. It was so refreshing this time to be able to leave the renovation mess on-site.

What was your vision for the space from the beginning, and how did it evolve throughout the renovation?
This place had great core foundations, but the interior was old, tired, and in desperate need of a complete update. For me, it was about creating a home that not only looked good but felt good too — a calm, peaceful place to land. I’ve always drawn inspiration from Nordic and Japanese design, the way they balance form and function, blending simplicity and warmth with a sense of calm and unnecessary clutter.

You’ve mentioned working within a tighter budget — what are your top tips for creating a beautiful, high-impact space without overspending?
Do your research and shop around before making decisions — it helps give you a clear direction and saves time, money, and disappointment. Decide where to invest a little more, and make compromises elsewhere to balance your budget. For us, it was the kitchen. Working within limits can be challenging, but you can still create a beautiful look and feel by thoughtfully bringing the right elements together. It’s those personal, carefully chosen pieces that you add at the end that truly complete a space and make it feel like home.

Any other advice for anyone interested in flipping homes or getting started with their first renovation project?
As mentioned previously do your research early on in the project or even better before the project starts. Surround yourself with people who are great at what they do, experienced, and trustworthy — those who are reliable and open to answering plenty of questions. With so many moving parts, clear and consistent communication is everything. Most importantly, stay true to yourself and what you love. You’ll feel most at home in a space that reflects you, not just what’s trending.

Which Flooring Xtra products did you choose for this project, and what made them the right fit for your design?
For this project we chose the Traffic 250 in Swan Blonde and the carpet was Astelia in Spice. They needed to be cost effective, durable and easy to keep clean. And I love how they have created a neutral calming feeling while allowing the opportunity for someone else to add their personality and personal touch to the space.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the renovation, and how did you overcome them?
l think it was the balancing act of wearing all of the hats from start to finish with a young family and finding a moment to fill your own cup in between. But we would do it all over again! I am very grateful for my incredible husband, Steve who will always step in to help and share the load wherever it was needed.

As someone who’s completed multiple renovations while raising a young family, how do you balance the chaos of construction with family life?
In the past, living and working in a renovation came with its challenges with little ones around and they naturally took a back seat. As the seasons of life shift, it’s important to pause, reassess, and focus on what is most important and for us, that is always our children. As they are getting older it feels exciting to step back into it.

Looking ahead, do you see yourself taking on more renovation projects — and if so, what’s next?
Yes — I’m sure there will be more to come. We always seem to finish one project and start thinking about the next! Steve and I make a great team. He’s brilliant with the financial and logistical side, while I love all things creative — from interiors and styling to sourcing, communication, and managing the project. There is something incredibly rewarding and addictive seeing a space completely transformed. I truly believe your environment has a profound effect on your mood and overall wellbeing. I am looking forward to turning more houses into homes.
