Designing with Heart: Olive Point Studio

For Olive Point Studio, great design is about more than just aesthetics — it’s about creating homes that flow seamlessly and stand the test of time. In this project, Architectural Designer, Sara, transformed her parents’ home with a neutral palette, natural textures, and flooring choices that add both warmth and durability. The result is a space that feels personal, timeless, and beautifully liveable.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and Olive Point Studio? What inspired you to become an architectural designer?

I come from a family of artists, builders and landscape designers so I was always fascinated by architecture and interior design from a young age. After gaining experience working for several design studios in London, I returned to New Zealand and started Olive Point Studio in 2020 equipped with the knowledge I had learnt.

What was your vision for the space? Were there any important design elements to consider?

Our vision for the space was to create a light modern home that felt open and welcoming while working within the existing footprint. As we weren’t altering the layout, it was important to use materials and finishes that enhanced the sense of space and flow. We focused on clean lines, neutral palette and thoughtful detailing to bring in as much light as possible while keeping the over all look timeless and modern.

Did working on such a personal project change the way you approached the design process compared to your usual client work?

Designing my parents’ home was a special project. While it was personal, I approached it with the same care and attention I give to all my projects. I always treat each project as if it were my own; balancing functionality and aesthetics, and ensuring the end result feels both beautiful and liveable.

Are there any stand-out features of the home that you’re particularly proud of?

I am proud of how the entire home came together. The consistent palette and the way each room flows into the next makes the design successful.

Which Flooring Xtra products did you choose for this project, and what made them the right fit for your design?

The flooring played a key role in achieving the overall look and feel of the home. We chose Quick-Step Perspective Nature laminate in Beige Varnished Oak for the living area, kitchen, and entrance to bring warmth, durability, and a timeless modern aesthetic. In the hallway and bedrooms, Bremworth Samurai in Kawa was the perfect fit, adding softness and comfort while keeping the palette light and cohesive throughout the home.

Where do you draw inspiration from when designing?

I draw inspiration from Mediterranean influences and timeless modern design. I love combining natural textures, classic aesthetics that feel fresh and timeless. I love creating homes that balance warmth and simplicity with a style that remains timeless for years to come.

What’s one design tip you think can make the biggest impact in a home renovation?

Focus on creating a cohesive design that flows throughout the home. Consistency in materials, finishes, and colour palette makes all the difference; it not only elevates the overall look, but also creates a sense of calm and connection between the spaces.

Are there certain areas in a build or renovation where you think it’s worth splurging, and others where you can save?

I encourage clients to splurge on elements that you can touch and feel every day, like the flooring, kitchen joinery, bathroom fittings. These are the details that add lasting value and also endure daily use, so quality makes a huge difference. Where you can save is in the more decorative features such as lighting or hardware where smart selections and styling can achieve a high end look without overspending.

Are there any design trends you’re loving right now, or ones you’re steering away from?

Mediterranean influences such as curved forms, and organic finishes are trends I am loving at the moment. I tend to steer away from trend driven design choices such as bold accent colours or statement finishes that can date quickly.

What’s next for you and Olive Point Studio? Any exciting projects on the horizon?

We are currently collaborating with wonderful clients on some exciting projects and are excited to see the homes come to life, while also working on a personal project; the design and build of our holiday home in Taupo.
