A little more
about us

Over two decades ago, Rebecca and Chris continued the legacy started by Chris's parents, David and Daphne Burns, who founded Winton Flooring Specialists Limited in 1970. Their vision was to be more than just a business but a symbol of craftsmanship and unwavering dedication to the Southland community.
In 2009, they joined the Flooring Xtra national co-operative, accessing a wealth of nationwide resources and opportunities. By 2011, they expanded their presence to Invercargill with the acquisition of H & J’s Flooring Xtra. This move marked a significant new challenge for Rebecca and Chris as they split their time between two stores – Winton & Invercargill. They had to back themselves, responsible for their own success within the new business, with no one to fall back on. It was truly a sink or swim moment.
Today, Flooring Xtra proudly serves both residential and commercial clients across Southland, from Stewart Island to Te Anau & Milford Sound, Lumsden to Invercargill Central. The team has grown from the original seven members to a family of 27 dedicated professionals. 2023 marked another significant milestone as they welcomed five new shareholders into their fold, followed by two more in 2024. This strategy aims to secure the future of the business, ensuring it doesn’t solely rely on Rebecca and Chris. New shareholders are stepping into roles to drive the company forward, embodying the values that have defined Flooring Xtra Invercargill and Winton’s success.
Their journey has been marked by milestones, accolades, and awards; however, for Rebecca and Chris, it’s not just about the business; it’s about the community that has welcomed them with open arms, and in return, they have been able to provide financial support for many charities and sports clubs within Southland. The highlight of their career has undoubtedly been their work at the Southland Charity Hospital. Flooring Xtra Invercargill and Winton undertook the mammoth task of donating the labour cost of fitting out the hospital while continuing to run their business as usual. This project has been an incredible experience, and they are immensely proud of how their team has embraced the opportunity to make a difference.
The journey over the past two decades has been about more than just flooring. It’s about building connections, creating a local imprint, and embracing the Southland spirit.
